G321 - Ideas for insitution names and logos

For our main institution we decided the name that we most preferred was the one we were originally given which was Pink Productions. we decided to stick with this name as she felt it fitted in with our style of film but also was the kind of name which could easily relate to a lot of ideas. We also came up with a second production name as we felt we needed another one which defined our group. We came up with different ideas of what this could be called and all agreed that the kind of name we wanted to go for was something that was quite innocent and child like. We then thought of different toys and objects associated with childhood and decided whether they worked or not. we came up with institution names such as; Finger puppet productions, Roundabout productions, The Music Box and Happy Bean productions. In the end we decided we were keen on on Happy Bean as we felt this was the most original idea but also was not sure whether the audience would get the wrong impression before our film started and that they may think it was a film aimed at children. We then decided that The Music Box was something that could fit into our film really well. We decided that the music made from the logo could be a light instrumental tune that could carry onto the beginning of our film.

This is what we are hoping our institutional logos will look like when we put them into our film opening.

G321 - Notes and images of clothing

Sarah
Sarah's clothing throughout the four scenes will change as they are set in different times and in each time she is in different locations. For the first scene she will be wearing outdoors clothing as she is in the park. The clothing for this scene must be practical and comfortable and typical clothes for a young mum. As she is outside she will most likely be wearing a coat and shoes that are suitable for running around with and playing with her daughter so they will most likely be flat boots.
For the birthday party scene her style of clothing will change to being more formal. She will not be overly dressed up but she will make an effort. The difference in clothing for this scene will be that she will wear jewellery as before jewellery would not have been suitable for the environment she is in.
For the final scene where Sarah is grieving over Ella she will be shown in a low state. We want her to come across as if she has not made any effort at all and show the difference between what she was like when Ella was alive. She used took pride in her appearance and wore clothes that a woman her age would typically wear but we want to show how in the present she has no desire for making the effort and would rather just be in comfort. We want it to come across as though she has not bothered to change and just wants to remain in comfort in her daughters bedroom.

G321 - Initial Story Board

This is the first storyboard we have created.

By Paige and Millie

Feedback
Positive - Good storyline, appropriate images and camera shots, very good titles and consistent music.
Improvements - A bit to complicated, try not to give to much away as its an opening it should be basic and also consider mise en scene.

We have taken the comments on board and would like to make the improvements suggested.

G321 - Initial script

This is an improvement of our script, we took the feedback from the our initial script and used it to make our script fit the drama genre better.

Images are shown of family videos and happy memories. Child's laughter is played in the background as well as Sarah calling out to Ella.

Park scene
Ella - (over the top of the images of the park and Sarah having fun in the park) When i was six, Mummy took me to the park and promised we would only go home when i wanted to. She said it was our special day, a day for us to enjoy. I remember her being so happy, I've never seen her laugh as much as she did that day. Not long after Daddy came and said he didn't want to push me on the swing. He then made us go home.. but i never said i wanted to.

Party scene
Ella - (People singing happy birthday, slowly begins to fade out and later comes to a sudden stop when Nick enters) That year Mummy promised me the best birthday party ever. She didn't let me down, she never did. She made the cake all by herself and was even more excited than i was! But then daddy came home from work and didn't sing happy birthday when everyone else did. Then he sent all my friends home, i never did know why.

(Sarah starts to look through pictures of Ella)

Ella - You don't need to worry about me mummy, I'm not in pain anymore, and I'm still here. Its you I'm worried about.

(Sarah looking through more pictures)

Sarah - I just want my little girl back

Ella- I'll never forget you Mummy, you're my hero

Sarah - (letting out her emotions) why do i feel like I'm the only one thinking about you and missing you!

(Sarah looks at a picture of Ella and nick and notices they look distant and Nick shows no interest in Ella)

Sarah - wait a minute

(Nick appears behind her, watching what she is doing)

Nick - what are you doing?

By Yas
Feedback

When we asked a variety of different people for positive feedback they said we used good use of language for a little girl, the script isnt too long  and seems like an opening, you can tell actors emotions by the words and we had detailed stage directions.

When we asked a variety of different people for improvements for our script they said to take out the line "wait a minute" as this line does not fit in a real film and make it clearer that Ella is a voiceover.

G321- Analysing film openings

To help us with our genre, we have decided to analyse some tragic film openings to see what they contain and what effects they have to make it the drama it is.

My Sisters Keeper
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS55xHZWzEo
Narrative – A little girl is talking about her family, and why she was born for a reason, to save her sister.
Genre – The genre is a tragic drama as it is about a young girl fighting through her battle of cancer.
Atmosphere – The atmosphere I think is very light hearted at the moment, you are just learning about this family, you don't really feel anything till the end of the opening when you find out the sisters is dying then you feel sympathy.
Titles The titles are used extremely well! Everything is in the opening from the actors to producer to director the only negative thing we think is that the title "My Sisters Keeper", comes up way to early.
Sound – There is a very light soundtrack playing, quite slow paced but just a gentle rhythm to follow and not to overpowering.
Character – We know that the film is going to involve a family, at the moment we find out there is a mother, father and two daughters, we haven't been introduced to any other characters yet.
Themes - The themes involved with the film are death, birth, terminal illness, family and betrayal.
Setting - In the opening we actually don't find out where the film is set, all we see is home videos and the familys memories.

G321 - Timeline of opening (focusing on titles)

In this lesson we created a timeline which showed the titles for an opening film. The reason we did this was because when it comes to our group making our film we need to start thinking about the titles as they are very important in an opening! I chose the opening of my sisters keeper because it's a popular tragic drama which is helpful because it's the genre I'm doing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS55xHZWzEo
0.00 - Start
0.02 - Film makers name
0.07 - Main actors name (female)
0.17 - Main actors name (female)
0.24 - Title of film
0.33 - Main actors name (male)
0.37 - Main actors name (male)
0.40 - Main actors name (female)
0.46 - Sub actors name (female)
0.51 - Sub actors name (male)
0.54 - 3 minor actors names (shown together) (male)
0.58 - Casting directors name
1.02 - Costume designers name
1.09 - Music directors name
1.12 - Co-producers name
1.25 - Editors name
1.29 - Production designers name
1.34 - Director of photography's name
1.41 - Executive producers name
1.51 - "Based on novels" name
1.55 - Producers names
2.01 - Screen plays names
2.05 - Directors name
2.05 - End

By doing this task we have started to realise how important the titles are in the opening, this opening is only 2 minutes yet it has 15 titles! We noticed that the title came up very early in this opening as well (wouldn't want ours to come up so quickly. When we come to making our film opening we will defiantly need to add in all the titles because they are very important as that's what makes and opening an opening.

G321 - Mise en scene

Considering Mise en scene for our film opening is a vital part of creating our opening. It is not only the characters that are important but also everything else in the scene which creates the correct atmosphere for our piece that represents our genre correctly. When thinking about mise en scene we have to consider clothing, props, lighting and setting which are all things that put across our opening in the way that we intend.

Scene one - (Images of family memories in old videos on different occasions and celebrations)
Setting - the television is based in the family home where Sarah is watching it, replaying the videos. The clips are set in different places as they show the family celebrating birthdays, Christmas and other happy memories but are mostly set in their house.
Clothing - No characters are seen in this scene apart from the ones in the videos who will be dressed casually.
Lighting - some of the footage will be outside so the lighting will be naturalistic where as some will be indoors where the light is more dimmed on birthdays where the cake is bought in or light as its early in the morning on Christmas.
Props - typical props you would see in a family home. Furniture, family photos in background, toys that the children play with etc.

Scene two - (Park scene that shows footage of Sarah having fun, insinuating that Ella is there with her and  shows parts of the park where they once had fun)
Setting - Out doors in their local park
Clothing - Sarah will be wearing casual clothing as she is seen running around and being care free so wearing clothing that is more comfortable shows her fun side and how she is not afraid to let herself go.
Lighting - Naturalistic lighting as it is set outside
Props- swings, slide, monkey bars and other park features

Scene three - (Birthday party scene where Ella celebrates her 6th birthday with family and friends)
Setting - In the family's house in the lounge where they are all in celebrating Ella's birthday
Clothing - Adults are wearing more smart clothing and party wear but still quite relaxed. When nick later enters her is wearing his work suit but his tie is undone showing how he is restless and had a hard day
Lighting - dimmed lighting as Sarah enteres with the cake and friends and family sing happy birthday
Props - Birthday cake that is later shown with candles blown out, banners that are later shown pulled down once the party ends and other party accessories like presents and cards around the decorated room

Scene four - (Sarah is in Ella's bedroom looking through pictures of her and getting emotional by looking at them)
Setting - in the family home in Ella's bedroom. The bedroom has clearly not be touched since she died and the beds are perfectly made and no toys are out of place. The room is very innocent looking and how a typical young girls bedroom would look like.
Clothing - Sarah wears casual clothing and looks quite scruffy. This shows how she has let herself go a bit and hasn't taken much care in her appearance that day as she is feeling down. When Nicks makes his appearance he is yet again wearing his work suit which shows that he is always there instead of comforting his wife.
lighting - Quite light in this room with light entering through the windows which brighten up the already light room.
Props - Typical toys and pieces of furniture that would be in a young girls room. Soft toys surrounding Sarah on the bed and delicate children's toys all around the room.

G321 - Considering Locations of Filming

For our opening film we want to create places young children go and have fun doing, this is to create a fun atmosphere, we want to make the fun places look dark and sad after we have shown them being happy.

First of all we want to use a park as the little girl loved going to the park.

Our idea is to show everyone happy happy fun in the park then the camera turning and the swing swinging on its own - deserted.

Another place we want to use for our film is a lounge, with banners and balloons decorating it to create a birthday party.

Our idea is to show the mum making an effort for the little goes birthday by making a party for her in her house.

Another idea we want to use is a study in a house with a computer.

Our idea is to have the the mum and children sitting in there looking at the computer screen to book a holiday.

Another idea we want to use is a master bedroom for the mum to sit there and reminisce.

Our idea is for the mum to be sitting in here all comfy looking through pictures of her daughter.

G321 - Film brief

We had to come up with a 25 word film brief for our whole film, this will help us simply tell the storyline on what is going to happen.
When Ella's short life ends her mum discovers something that turns her life around. What will it take to confront her husband for her daughters sake.

We then came up with a 25 word film brief for our opening because we are only doing the opening of a film.

When Ella's short life comes to an end her Mum reminisces the memories they had and discovers there is more to the story than she first thought.

G321 - Certification

What's the point ?
This is what the British Film Institution have said. (The reason why we have certification)
- Legal Obligations - To prevent material from breaking the law.
- Protective - Audience may need protecting from items that may cause harm.
- Societal - To consider broader public opinion in mind with regard to language.

BBFC (British board of film classification) - They decide every certification of every film in Britain.

To help me see what age certification my group could have for our film, I have looked at existing tragic drama films and there certificate age.

My Sisters Keeper (2009) - 12A
Beaches (1988) - 12
Time Travellers Wife (2009) - 12A
Ps I Love You (2007) - 12A
Step Mom (1998) - 12
Seven Pounds (2008) - 12A
If Only (2004) - 15
Shawshank Redemption (1994) - 15
Benjamin Button (2008) - 12A
The Green Mile (1999) - 18
The Champ (1979) - PG
A walk to remember (2002) - PG
My Life (1993) - 12
My Girl (1991) - PG
Titanic (1997) - 12
The Notebook (2004) - 12A
The Last Song (2010) - PG
Gone With Wind (1939) - PG

By looking at these existing films I have noticed that most Tragic Drama films have a certificate age of 12, when me and my group create our film we would like it to have a certificate age of 12 this is because most of the films out there are a 12 so we think it would be most suited to what we want to create.

Suitable for 12 years and over
"Exactly the same criteria are used to classify works at ‘12A’ and ‘12’. These categories are awarded where the material is suitable, in general, only for those aged 12 and over. Works classified at these categories may upset children under 12 or contain material which many parents will find unsuitable for them." This is what the BBFC said about age 12 certification.

G321 - Target audience profile

Our film is a tragic drama aimed at Brits who have an interesting in realistic emotional situations. It is most likely to appeal to those from group A right through to E audience, this is because you don't have to be educated to understand our film, you just have to know about tough situations which happen to people in everyday life so a category person A and a category person E may be in the same situation (example. family loss) so our film is very open to demographic groupings. Also this genre is not suitable for young children, this is due to the plot of the film usually being hard hitting. To enjoy our film you must be interested in the realistic tragic stories which happen in everyday life, you must be prepared to see emotional tough hard hitting story lines and to see that life isn't perfect as everyone has problems. We are aiming our film mostly at Women and this is because this gender prefers emotional type films compared to males who like there action packed films. The audience theory our film would be is "The Reception Theory", this is because as our genre is a tragic drama it is real to life so people can put themselves in that situation or can think back to when they were in a similar or the same situation so they can relate to the film. By looking at these existing films we have noticed that most Tragic Drama films have a certificate age of 12, when we create our film we would like it to have a certificate age of 12 this is because most of the films out there are a 12 so we think it would be most suited to what we want to create. Also it will be a 12 because although it will not have any sexual scenes or bad language it will however contain a hard hitting storyline which would not be suitable for a child.

G321 - Tragic drama moodboard

For our genre we have chosen a tragic drama. We deicded to make it more of a specific genre as we felt drama was too broad and we wanted something to narrow down our choice of storylines. When you think of drama's you think of the typical points that are assosiated with it like love, affairs, death, betrayal, neglect etc. When creating this moodboard we though of all the different things that our film could be about to help us come to a decision of what our opening was going to be based on. From the beginning we all liked the idea of using a child as a focal point that brings emotion to the film. We have looked into this when doing our moodboard and wanted there to be a connection lost between a child and a parent. we put this across in the moodboard by gathering images of families but also contrasting that by having children upset and and neglected to show how we are still thinking about how we are going develop our storyline. The images of the actors and actresses that i have gathered are all the kind of people i would assosiate with drama's and would be the kind of people that we would have starring in our peice. As well as this there are also images of films that i consider similar to genre we want to create.

G321 - Notes on chosen genre

The genre of our filming opening is a tragic drama. We chose this genre as we felt confident that we could create something original by using this genre and we felt it suited us as a group. We all felt a connection to films of this genre and have all said how we enjoy watching dramas. This helped as it meant we could come up with more ideas as we understood that drama is a broad genre. To it down we then decided to make it a tragic drama. We did this to make it more specific and to show how we were not touching other aspects that are associated with dramas. In dramas there are certain aspects of a film that you can expect to see. Because the genre is so broad there are many different types of dramas. This is why we wanted to make it into a tragic drama as we already had a vision of what we wanted the film to be like and we wanted it to have emotion and tragedy which is usually caused by a death. If we stuck to it being a drama then it could give the wrong kind of impression to the audience as they may not be sure to what may conclude in the film.
Something typical that happens in dramas is romance. We understood this and because ours is not based on romance, but romance that is lost, we did not want to give the wrong impression. Instead we wanted to show the tragedy of it and how love is no longer there due to the tragedies life has thrown at a married couple. As we are only creating an opening and in this opening there are only two characters shown a man and a woman we did not want it to seem as though after the opening, the film was going to be focused on romance because we wanted to highlight the space created between them.
Another type of drama is a period or historical drama. We knew from the start that we did not want to go into this as we felt it would be too difficult to re-create a period of time without loosing the effect. We also felt we did not know enough about this type of drama to base our film on it and stuck with tragedy as the end result would be more effective
Another type of drama is a melodrama. This is similar to the type of drama that we chose to do but more exaggerated. If we did this we could have made it come across as fake and may not have created the same emotion we intended to if we did a melodrama. Melodramas contain emotion and tragic elements but they take it to the extreme. They are usually performed in operas which is why we stuck to our original idea as it may not have worked in a modern day based film. We wanted to create something that audiences could relate to and feel sympathy for the characters involved. With tragedies we knew we had to incorporate a death but in an opening it is difficult to put that across. Because of this we instead decided to start from the young girl already passed away and base our film on the struggles that families face when having to death with death and how it breaks relationships and unravels hidden secrets.

G321 - Audience expectations

Our genre for our final film opening is going to be a Tragic Drama, we chose this genre because we know a lot about these types of films and thought it would be quite difficult to do so it would challenge us, you have to think more about a tragic drama than you do a horror (which would just be dark setting, creepy music, death, blood) so we have chosen to do a tragic genre.
In order for us to get as much research for our tragic drama we wanted to find out what the audience think of these types of films so we have created a questionnaire to find out their expectations of a tragic drama, we have asked a range or ages to give us the best results (so we have a variety of ages because people will have different opinions)

   Dancing with wolves

By asking a range age of people our questionnaire we have found out that all of them said death had to be involved somehow, the characters should either be a family or couple (need to have a close bond), scenarios could be miscarriage, abortion, family death, missing person, heart break or someone terminally ill fighting a battle. Our tragic drama could be set in a very small quiet area, where not a lot happens. There are a lot of tragic films listed which we could find out about to help is become experts in what is involved in a tragic drama. Lastly the audience said that the soundtrack is one of the most important things especially by setting the mood and making things twice as sad so when we come to making our film we will have to think carefully about the soundtrack.
We are glad we have done this because it helps us discover what the audience expect to see in a drama, when we come to thinking of our ideas that we want we can look back at the scenarios, themes, sound, characters etc... and see what the audience would like.

These results show that in the opening of our film we definitely need to show death, not in a visual way but we need to make the audience realise that someone has died or is going to die in our film. The characters which the audience most expect to find would be a family so I think we do need to consider this, because with tragic drama's they often always use families to show how close they are in there relationships. Our film could be set in the country side of a family home the audience thinks. We discovered that the most well known drama film to our audience is "My sisters keeper", because of this I think we will be relating to this film a lot during the planning and process of our film opening, and this also links in with the fact the audience think a terminal illness is a topic that would suit going into a tragic drama.

G321 - Jelly baby task

We were set the task to plan some film openings (of any genre) using jelly babies to help us by adding them into each shot.
The reason we were doing this is because it helps us prepare for creating our actual film opening, to make sure its not too complicated as an opening scene doesn't give to much away.
This is the film opening we created, the genre of it was horror, It starts off with a house in the middle of no where in pitch black then it moves along to showing the little baby asleep, the teenager on her computer, and the mum and dad asleep, next we go to a forest which is next to the house which is dark and scary later we then see a man wearing a mask in the forest and lastly we then see the house the next morning in daylight.
By doing this task it has taught us not to over complicate things, you don't want to have to much in your opening because you don't want to give away the whole story line, you want to keep it as a open narrative so there is still things to come. We thought that our opening was a good idea (as a horror with a house out in the open) but I thought mine was too complicated, you just want to set the scene and not add to many things in, your just introducing the film and it's genre.

G321 - Re-makes of films

We were given the task to do 3 re-makes of film openings, they each had a different genre, Horror, Thriller & Comedy.
Our Group did Vertigo, Strangers and 50 first dates, the reason we are doing these film re-makes is to prepare us for when we do our own film opening.
By doing these re-makes we will have to plan by doing a story board and shot list, we will then have to film our opening and lastly edit it, when we come to doing our actual film opening we will know how to plan, how to film and how to edit.
If we make mistakes during this task we can learn from it when we come to our actual making of our film openings, also we will know what our group works well at and what we need to improve on (We might be really good at doing storyboards and filming but may need to improve on how to do a shot list and edit) It makes us 100% more prepared for the real thing.
We are doing these re-makes of films to benefit us, when we come to doing our final film openings we will know exactly what we are in for and what to do, its not going to be all new for us and also we can improve a lot as well with the planning, filming and editing.

Evaluation
Our task was to create three different film opening that came under three different types of genre. These genres were comedy, horror and thriller. Our group who included Yas, Millie and Paige all decided we would benefit from re-creating 50 first dates, the strangers and vertigo. We set out aims for us as a group and wanted to make sure we used our time efficiently and divided up the amount of work to ensure each of us had a fair share of work to do so we all had the chance to use equipment and get used to creating an opening

As soon as we finished creating our shot lists and storyboards we got straight on with filming as we did not want to waste any time and wanted to make sure we got on with it and did not get behind. I think because we were so determined to finish them as soon as we could but also make them of a good quality helped up to reach our aim as we worked effectively throughout the whole task. We managed to film each one in the space of an hour each but with The Strangers we managed to do in half an hour. I think we managed our time well and most of this was due to the fact that we believe that we work well together and all knew what we had to get on with which saved us a lot of time. Being able to work well together and combining ideas to come up with unique ways to re-create our openings was a major part that helped in us creating our films in time and also making the ideas creative and original. I think if we didn’t work as well as a group our openings would have not turned out how they did as we all shared ideas and listened to what everyone had to say and combined those ideas to come up with a definite decision and put that into our openings.

Any problems that occurred when filming were mostly due to not being able to find the correct setting for our type of scene. It was sometimes difficult to match to was seen in the original opening as trying to make it as similar as possible became very difficult seeing as we were restricted to only film on school grounds. However I do think we worked around this and managed to make it work as well as we could and were imaginative when it came to thinking of ideas of how to re-create certain parts.

Overall I think we worked really well together and this showed through how we completed our films in good timing. This then gave us enough time to do our editing. I think we found the editing more difficult than the filming itself as it was difficult to try and find similar sound effects to the ones used in the original opening. Once we got the hang of using iMovie it became easier to use and make it look better. The three film opening we used all included a transition of some sort and with vertigo in particular we had to change the color of the whole opening as we wanted to be as close to the original as possible. Even though this took longer to do I think it defiantly paid off in the end as it make all three films look as similar as they could in the time we were given.

If we were to go back and start filming these again I don’t think there would be anything major that we would want to change as we were all proud of what we had created and do not feel there were any problems that we faced that we could not work around. We obviously had a few, small problems during both filming and editing as for some parts of the openings we found more difficult and challenging than expected and some took longer than what we thought but I think we still managed to overcome this and realised it was not going to be easy but we didn’t want it to be easy as we wanted to be prepared for making our actual film opening. I think working together on this task confirmed the fact that we are happy working as a group and we feel that when moving onto filming our opening we are confident that we will continue to work well together.
